Know your opponent
As a child I was far from a perfect student. The problem wasn’t that I was dumb. In fact, looking back, I remember everyone around me saying what a bright kid they thought I was. The problem was that I was bored. My mind wandered in class. I couldn’t find a hook to keep me interested in what was being taught. At that point in my life, all I had learned from my teachers was that I was smart enough to put in the minimal amount of effort and still skate by.
‘When I was six or seven years old, after bringing home a failed test, my mother sat me down and gave me one of the most important pieces of advice I was ever given.
“Just treat it as a game,” she said to me.
“See how well you can do and then try and do even better than that the next time.”
